Since 2018 Konstantin Bayer has been creating objects, installations and works on paper with thermoactive pigment. This is characterized by the fact that it changes its color depending on temperature, or changes from black to transparent when heated. The Blackouts series are historical color lithographs from early editions of various encyclopedias, such as the Meyers Universallexikon, or the Brockhaus. Bayer covers these original lithographs with this pigment and backs the sheet with a heating mat. After the heating mat has been switched on, the monochrome black image shows the underlying motif of mostly extinct or endangered animal and plant species after a short time. If the current is now switched off again, the image becomes monochrome black again after a short time. This process can be repeated as often as desired.
