The single-channel video installation "Lippendorf" consists of the interplay of a video sequence and a sound composition originating from another source. Lippendorf is a lignite-fired steam power plant in the south-east of Leipzig and, with CO2 emissions of 11.1 million tonnes, is the power plant with the ninth highest greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. The power plant is criticised for emitting large amounts of nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides, mercury and fine dust, to the latter of which carcinogenic substances (lead, cadmium, nickel, PAHs, dioxins and furans) can adhere. The heavy metal emissions in particular are clearly higher than comparable German lignite-fired power plants. According to a study commissioned by Greenpeace from the University of Stuttgart, the pollutant emissions caused by 67 German coal-fired power plants were responsible for the loss of about 33,000 years of life in Germany and Europe each year. The artist tries to underline this almost unimaginably high figure by showing a video of the cloud-forming exhaust gases from one of the cooling towers in combination with a droning sound composition, based on a field recording of a car drive. The clouds seem threatening and massive and the gloomy, deep rumbling sound puts the viewer in a feeling of uncertainty.
