Konstantin Bayer's works focus on novel uses of artistic spaces: unusual locations and the interaction between space, artwork and recipient play a central role. Bayer, who studied for several semesters at Tongji University in Shanghai as part of his master's degree in "Integrated International Media Art and Design Studies," primarily incorporates influences from China. This resulted, for example, in the project "Chinarestaurant", which transformed the Galerie Eigenheim in Liebknechtstraße in Weimar into an Asian fast food restaurant for four weeks. The holistic staging of the space through Far Eastern décor and Chinese music in an air permeated with deep-frying fat provided the perfect simulation of an apparently typical Asian restaurant. The living work of art was complemented by Bayer himself, who mimed the innkeeper in a wig and Chinese garb. The people of Weimar reacted with corresponding irritation. Did art have to give way to cuisine? "These reactions were very interesting. I was able to show that the targeted use of stereotypes and clichés absolutely fulfills visitors' expectations.
